Introduction of Logistics Research and Information Dominance

Today’s Logistics and Logisticians require multi-disciplinary capabilities that combines Engineering Knowledge, Information Management and Business Intelligence skills to successfully deliver goods and services as well as information at the right time and in real time to the right place, right people, with the right quantity, quality and cost. This has been a challenge particularly in the Defence sector for all nations.

 

The Logistics Research Group was established in 2013 under the UNSW new strategic initiatives, the Rector’s office and the School of Business at Australia Defence Force Academy with the aim to create the first Research Centre of Excellence in Defence Logistics in Australia in the forthcoming future. It is built from the former University Research Centre of Excellence on Extended Enterprises and Business Intelligence (CEEBI since 2004), AoRE (Area of Research Excellence) on Frontier Information Technologies (FIT since 2003) and the University Research Centre on Logistics Informatics (since 2001).

We have developed into one of the world’s outstanding groups of research excellence with researchers at the cutting edge of the most exciting and significant fields. We have a unique position internationally working at the intersection of Defence, Business, IT and other human endeavours encapsulated by its motto of "creating value by making connections".

The capability includes:

1. Heterogeneous Systems Integration and legacy data migration from multiple information sources.
2. Cyber Security and Trust with End-to-End Visibility enables track and trace Accountability.
3. Cognitive Decision Support leading to minimum training and maximum automation.
4. Blockchain and Data Lack, micro-service, Docker and container, private block chain and Elastics Search of heterogeneous data sources.
5. Conjoint Data mining, predictive analytics, ontology and semantics reasoning.
6. IoT and Mobile Edge Computing for data supply chain and BI solutions.

Through utilising their unique combined industry and academic experience, they have established strong linkages with the Australian Defence Force (ADF) (Acquisition and sustainment, Navy, Army and Air Force), Defence Industry (such as LINFOX, Honeywell etc), International defence logistics centres from the UK, USA, The Netherlands and NATO, etc and formed academic research collaboration within and outside of the Business School and the University. They have started revamping the Logistics under-graduate and post-graduate degrees with the cutting edge theory and practice that defence force personnel need for their careers. In terms of research effort, apart from the successful award of several project funds related to Defence Logistics Big Data, Navy SWIM project and Risk Management of Logistics operations in 2014, their recent effort has resulted in being awarded a large Defence research contract exceeding $4 million in in cash funds for research and development in the last few years. The Defence project commences in January 2015 and the team to date has delivered 8 practical working modules that has been tested in the field and they are one of the best value for money for ADF in its history in terms of contracted research outputs.
